Powers

Most simply, Flight allows for control over gravity; for most of the people in the world (particularly those who don't know of the Motion wild Power), it's viewed as simply the ability of its bearers to lift themselves into the air - and, if they're powerful, to do the same to others. Because of the nature of the Power, most users look more like they're running or walking in the air than "flying" in the traditional sense.

However, there's another side to the House of Flight, one that certainly isn't talked about in public circles. Kate Wilson the Younger alludes to it in her Chronicles annotations:1

"'Flight itself is a misnomer, pointing to a relatively minor aspect of the power of Pat and Franklin. The nature of the new House touches on a primal substance that may transcend the more primitively described 'Earth, Air, Fire, Water' of the other elemental houses. When Pat or Franklin 'fly,' they are simply controlling what we in the Old World would call 'gravity.' Their power raises the forces that bind together the world, and blurs the distinction between energy and matter. It is fortunate for us that such a House, with such potential for mayhem, has remained under the sway of such people as Pat Bly and Franklin — though the latter, through his destruction of Corwin Plocs, hinted at what might rise from such power."

While the curious young members of the House are strictly forbidden from experimenting with other aspects of the Power without permission, enough evidence has been gathered to suggest that Flight can both break what Old Worlders would call atomic bonds - disintegration - and forge new ones, allowing for the creation of solid matter from thin air (a bit of witchery on Creation that it's probably best not to think about too hard). It's also been implied that Flight - alongside Shadow - helps Franklin with the practice of teleporting armies…

History

The existence of the wild Power of Flight was evidenced from the earliest days of the Chronicles, as can be seen from this note in year 17:

"The Blys were attacked by Morlocks unknown, and Pat Bly of the couple lifted her House clear of the conflict and carried herself and her children away across the city to a better neighborhood. And Alice Ayers, our 'Air Alice,' the only other with such a power, was lost to us…"2

This suggests that Franklin, later on perhaps the best-known holder of the Power, had not yet emerged as one of its bearers (though it is less than ten years later, in Year 24, that Bart Norris alludes to "riding with him" as one of the options for those seeking a view of the world from the air). On the other hand, the legacy of Alice Ayers, one of the flight crew from the airplane who appears to have been multi-House in Flight and Heavens, is scattered across these early pages; according to Kate Wilson the Elder, Alice"found her vocation in a flying ship… [and after her death], her ship and her spirit continued on." This might be perhaps the earliest of the airships that now stand as part of the holdings of both Flight and Heavens.

Given its status as a wild Power, it's unsurprising that the mentions of Flight through the early years of the Chronicles remain few and far between; it was not until the Gathering of 60, when the Houses assembled to swear fealty to Queen Julie Kronski, that Pat Bly (she of the first "floating house") appeared in the guise of a "Gray Avatar" and swore her House's loyalty. From Kate Wilson the Younger's analysis of the event, it seems that the only surprise to the assembled crowds was Pat's being called as founder instead of Franklin.
