Sorry for the lack of recaps, the month of May is a busy one, huh?

Quick rundown of the past month: with much normal PC/Blood havoc-wreaking we finally made it to Tol, to find a new-to-the-World Blood named Abeo Bandele who had just managed to escape from a shipful of Blood-kidnapping Kabari. Our party split as Collin lead an expedition to bring the evil-doers to justice while Marissa and Huck went into Tol with their original plan to investigate the source of the possible assassination attempt on Tomman of Speakers. Collin's group on the Faye caught up to the Kabari and completely outpowered them, more or less leaving them jibbering with the use of Seas, Toath, cold (Kurtus's removal of heat…), unmovable Earthers and of course Rangers galore. Meanwhile the crowd with Marissa found a Burly guide to lead them to the village they were seeking… the guide lead them into the confusion and danger that is the Fire Jack lands and then dissolved into nothing like the freakin' Cheshire Cat… turns out this guide was actually a pseudo-life doll held together with Creation, Souls, and Speakers, and good enough to fool two travelers of those Houses. Anyway, they managed to get out and back to Tol, but not before tensions between the Tollers and Burlies flared up and fighting broke out all over the woods…

This week:

Collin sails the Faye with the captured Kabari to the City for trial. Abeo goes along with Iggy (renamed from Issac to prevent name confusion) as the primary victims. All the Kabari are executed except one, which Kakar drags off, though not before the Queen tells him not to harm the now-gibbering and smoldering guy. He presumably gets shipped back to the Flame Coast to warn others not to cross the City. Abeo then goes to the House of Earth and asks about a bajillion questions, many of which would be of interest to University-types and people who haven't had much of a chance to see what exactly Earthers can do…

Kurtus initially stays in Toll to help Marissa and maybe go looking for Fire Jack (aka the Trapper) but gets an urgent summons from the Crown and is sailed straight there on one of the Warrior Lord's ships. The Queen is very interested in the Kabaris' garbled explanations of sleet and ice during the battle… it turns out that Kakar has expressly forbidden this type of use of the power and will undoubtedly now kill Kurtus at the first opportunity. The Queen however expressed an interest in further research into this type of power, or possibly just likes to stick it to Soulburner whenever she gets the chance, or both. Anyway she says that if Kurtus accepts service with her it will be easy to argue that his misuse of the power was also in service to the Crown. There's a hearing where Kakar and Matilda spout lots of legalese at each other and Kurtus sits and shakes a lot, but Kakar finally agrees. Clearly though he won't miss the opportunity to have Kurtus meet a fiery "accident" if he steps outside the City at all or even outside the Citadel without sufficient protection. At first the Queen isn't sure what position in the court to assign to Kurtus, but of course he immediately asks if there's a garden… the Queen assigns him the task of creating one, specifically a place where Green Minders can worship, with the condition that she can enter it even though she's not of the faith. This works out well, and brings out Kurtus's experiments with sunfire (use of the House of Flame that heals and nourishes plants… presumably Kakar doesn't approve of this either though he probably doesn't know about it yet. Oh and Kakar hates Green Mind.) which the Queen is also curious about, so she sets some University-types to work with Kurtus on both the cold and the sunfire uses of power. And then Kurtus wants to start cooking again… and discovers that he can use the cold power to make ice cream! So now he's the Queen's Gardener and Purveyor of Frozen Deserts. Though us old worlders like to call him the Good Humor man. Kakar is super pissed that he's still using the cold power, but when he tried to complain to the Queen she was like, "He makes me ice cream. I like ice cream."

Anyway, back at Tol… Marissa and company have a deadline, they need to get back to the City in time to get Sskie to his wedding, and they're working off of pretty stale leads at this point. They know that the group of Burlies that they are seeking produces little pseudo-life creation dolls with a touch of Souls and Speakers in them to make them more fun to play with. We manage to track down a few of these dolls, and sit down to try and get anything we can out of them. Sskie looks at them with his power and gets a very strong read on the soul of the person who actually made these dolls, he would be able to recognize this person if he ever came across him. Marissa manages to use the Speakers power in the dolls to get them to repeat back snippets of conversation that went on around them while they were being made. A lot of the conversation isn't helpful, but they do get the name of the Dollmaker- Lurgs, as well as the woman who oversees his work- Stiss. There are also snippets of conversation between the two where they complain about an outsider or outsiders, they dislike this person or persons and don't approve of what they are doing. With this tenuous new information we start to try to build up a new lead. Huck asks around town, using power, to try to pick up any new information on Lurgs or Stiss. Marissa pulls a repeat of what she did in Isle, sending out Lurgs' name intertwined in normal word-of-mouth conversation hoping to get an answer back on where he is. Unfortunately the fighting between the Tollers and the burlies means very little information is passing into Tol at the moment from the woods. The most that they get is that the dollmaker village heard that the Bloods were looking for them and broke up so they couldn't be tracked down. (This is standard practice among the Burlies.) The crew is pretty much decided at this point that they are going to have to tromp out into the woods and put up a show of force to get the Burlies to talk to them, and are gearing up to do just that…

So after 3 full months (give or take) of strategic/separated running, the group is finally reassembled for some good old-fashioned ground-pounding. Of course, as it was pointed out in the post-game discussion yesterday, does it really count as ground-pounding if there's no ground involved?

Miscellaneous adventures:

  • Qurunree's going to end up with his fancy Creation hand sometime in 113, and looks like he's going to be testing it out back in Rump; chaos has erupted in the empire (starting with, uh, the fact that the Emperor is stepping down ;)) and Great-Uncle Phil wants the family close, just in case. This means that young Freddy has been plucked away from the other two Musketeers for the time being, too.
  • Marissa made good use of her time in the City to forge some further links in her chain of Speakers communication, adding a few House uncalled to her "outer circle" of every-young-woman-in-the-City :)
  • Don't think this was mentioned last week - Sskie's got a girlfriend! (Sinda of the Folk, uncalled House of Flight, and ready to have Sskie's kid sometime in mid-113.) And Igil has himself a fiancee, no less! (Much to the quiet disappointment of other party members who return to hear this news and then wander off to be broody and angsty for a while ;))
  • And changing the subject entirely… so Tomas came back from his foray into the Toath world, looking no different and at the same time very different. Looks like a real warrior now… and rather more Chippish than probably anybody else in the world ;)
  • The last of last week's Greatness burn from Collin went into the House of Beasts, making good use of the triant before the ship sailed; there's now been a shrine constructed just inside the entrance to the House, open to any of Shifter's followers. Seemed like HL Ephraim was a bit hesitant about going along with matters - worried about slipping into the over-proselytizing path of the White Godders - but we'll see where it goes…

Then, finally in the first week of Toath, we all loaded up onto our boat and headed out! Huzzah! Random last-minute addition was Finn, of all people; seemed he'd caught wind of the trip and decided he wanted to try running again. And somehow got himself appointed as our sailmaker… or something… ("uh, sure. if something happens I can, uh, fix them with Creation.")

The fancy keel-less ship, christened the Faye, is a cozy little enterprise, with most of the non-Traveler types sleeping in barracks up front (though with Tomas and his servants there things aren't quite as uncomfortable as they might otherwise be ;)) Almost everybody's gotten drafted into playing some role for the crew, so we're pretty busy on shipboard - but although our ostensible purpose is to go down to Southcoast and investigate this matter from a few weeks back with the assassination attempt in Speakers, nobody's arguing that we can't stop and poke our noses into every town along the way.

And the very last event of the evening, as we came into sight of our first stop - "okay, men, lift!" At which point the ship comes up to skim over the surface of the water on its way into port.

Next week: havoc in Pardora it is. Er, I mean, poking around and having a good time… ::whistles::

Dun dun dun! No updates in almost two weeks! We're lame, I know. In my defense though, I'm very lazy. Anyways, let's get this thing going. Not tooooo much happened(yeah yeah Collin, we'll get to it), everyone was still doing there own little things. We've hit 113 though.

Ok! Where do we start? Well, since I'm writing it, we get to start with the coolest character, me! Since we missed last week, a smidgen of background, eh? After the gathering, Gerrod ambushed Qurunree and unfairly challenged him to a duel while he didn't have a hand, that he kind of had to accept. The consequences? Gerrod wins, he gets Qurunree's eye and the Shadowcat cloak. Gerrod loses, he dies, and Redclaw calls it quits on Qurunree. Unfortunately for Qurunree, Gerrod totally flipped out (Who rolls two boxcars in a row like that, honestly! Uhg). Qurunree yields, and the jerk tore out his eye. Qurunree managed to handle his maiming well (the same can't be said of his brother Freddie or old Tokar, they were rather put off), and his bad rep is gone! There was much rejoicing.
Qurunree did not tattle on Gerrod, which turned out to be wise, since that apparently would've likely signed his own death-warrant. Cause he acted all cool like and got maimed, Creation shelled out one of the very rare pseudo-life hands (to fix up Qurunree's other maiming), like old grampa Brighthand had.

In other news, some stuff happened.

The Travelers all had there house meetinks last week, which were very exciting, action packed, and dramatic. Sskie got a cool robe or something, and has a girlfriend, yay him.
Orop learned he hates the city, and Kurtus managed to save his conching skill with a lucky boxcars: turns out you can save people's lives without betraying your 'kill all humans' god. Huh, who would've guessed? Gerrod got picked up by old Sydney Hayes and happily dragged out west where he's killing people for his high lady in the name of the crown. Now that's a sweet gig, though apparently one of it's side-effects is sharing the bed with an 80-year old scary lady. Oh well.

Oh, right! Last week there was the ceremony for the 'heroes of the witsie war', where Collin, Igil, and some other people got cool boons and stuff from the Queen. Little "I <3 Urchin" Igil got a "Urchin's Favor" ring, so now when he's in the seas clubhouse he can show it off and get all the chicks. Too bad his keeper won't let him. Then again, maybe she would O.O
Collin asked the queen for help with his "little problem", namely Ronish wanting to eat his flight (poor little guy, it's always hardest to be in the middle). Oh, right, Collin! Since we're on the subject, let's talk about… Marissa! (Ha, sucker)

Right, so Jim Bond married his house with his kids (wannabe Clavius >.>) so now we have one happy House of… Bleens? Whatever. Marissa the Châtelaine managed to talk the house into… talking (it's more impressive than it sounds, I'm sure). It also turns out Jim Bond probably isn't going to die in the next couple years, so Marissa probably has more than 3 years to get that power up… But probably not tooo much time (hustle!).

What else happened… Ah yes. Chip, the lovable scamp, came and snatched up his Tomas for another war (yay, Tomas's favorite thing ever, adorable little war-mongering Issifnian that he is). This time, however, it was in the Toath world! Six years later, they finish their business; Nyssius the Fox, a deviant rebel (Gasp!) has been hunted down and slaughtered like a dog (like a fox? Well, like a canine anyway). Isn is pleased. 26(?) year old Tomas comes back after being gone for "6 months" and… he still looks 20? Gasps all around the table. Didja know dual housers are always long term? Cool stuff.

And that was the game!

Eh, what? Oh, oh right, Collin's stuff(don't hurt me). Sooo, Collin had his talk with the Queen, and they came up with a wild scheme to filter Collin's Ronish through his Beasts. Apparently that'll get him a delicious flavorful brew without all the grit, or something. The Queen promises to do her part, and Collin goes off on his grand trip over to the Great Vale. He gets there, go finds his big hawk buddy, and something like the following conversation happens:
"So… we're cool?"
"Raaaawr! I am big jealous Ronish!"
"But the Queen said we were cool! Come on man!"
"….Rawr!"
"Aha, but I have Greatness!"
"..R…rawr?" ~Burnt Greatness fills the air~

And that's exactly how it happened.

[Edit]: Oh, and also, Collin got Franklin to talk HL Teddy into helping out with the flying boat project, cause he's, ya know, the greatest sailor in the world, and stuff. Unfortunately, putting him in charge of his own project made him pretty sure he was in charge of Collin's too. Collin whined a bit, and was like "See this name tag? It says Collin Bilson. That means that the real Highlord said I got to do what I want! As… as long as we play dress-up sometimes. He… he likes to call me Quentin…"

But, shall we take a vote? A dozen idle words and Gerrod dies. What do you all think? Should I rid the world of one of its more grotesque disfigurements? And no making jokes about missing eyes or I'll smite you all =P

My recollection from when Steen described it to me:
1. Everyone in the House of Illusion was engulfed by the dark pallor, whether they'd been called up yet or not (Norma Stone had not been, as Hannah surmised). Terradil may have been an exception (I don't remember) — but if so, she was the only one. Various other members of the House reacted differently to the darkness (I think Perin fainted or something) but Norma was the only one it managed to shred/take/whatever before either it just dissipated or the House threw it off (hard to say which — no help at all from the Blood Royal at that point, by the way, not that there was necessarily anything they could have done to help). Dunno how much Stevie would know about what it felt like, or be able to tell if he knew, but there might be something to that.
2. '…"normal" Fewk woman…" Uh … for what it's worth, I'm pretty sure Deirdre's not a Fewk name. Sounds Irish to me. (And no, I don't think she's the Derdriu of legend. Just pointing it out.)

well, if I understand the sequence of things correctly, the only members of the House that were thus far assembled were the important ones…? since it was right after the calling of the Third Lady? Though then I don't know exactly how Norma Stone got nailed since she wasn't mentioned as one of the first ones to step up…

My first thought was that it was somehow connected to Terradil. Whatever was keeping her animated and evil decided to make a play for the house, got destroyed, and just left her as a "normal" fewk woman? Anyway, did the shroud descend only on the important people in the House or on all members? We could ask Stevie what it felt like…

So, it was mentioned as the 'big thing' of the Gathering 112, but I think the whole Illusion event deserves its own thread. First, I'll recap it in greater detail. If I get anything wrong, someone should let me know.

The Illusion calling begins, and Olinky is called as First HL and head of house, then the first two Ls, then, called as third L was Lady Teradeel, and in her way, she swirled in and started forward. Halfway there, she froze, as a black shroud suddenly appeared around Wink (Who is still a 'Mission Lord'). He struggles with it, and after a moment chokes out a desperate "Kill it Matilda!" The Queen however merely sits and watches. The Blood Royal rushed forward and combined their efforts to try and take it out (In particular Agatha), and at first their assault seemed to have work, and the black shroud disappeared. Only a moment later however, the entire house of Illusion was engulfed in blackness, and it all dissolved into chaos. Somehow, the shroud was ripping and tearing at them in a very literal sense. It didn't last long, and the dark shroud tore away from Illusion, taking with it Norma Stone. Throughout it all, Teradeel stood frozen, and was in fact the only member of Illusion who was not engulfed by the black shroud.

Things died down, and the Queen, who still hasn't done anything, looks at Wink and says "Shall we continue?" Wink, with his newly changed appearance, comes forward, but on his way stops before Teradeel. He looks at her for a moment, and quietly remarks that "that's ugly," and passes a hand across her face, instantly removing the hideous, unthinkable scars that covered her face, leaving a hard looking woman in her 60s dazedly touching her face. Wink bows before the Queen, and takes his place as first HL, with everyone else shifting over a bit.

The Gathering starts up again, and "Lady Deirdre" is called as third L. The once Teradeel steps forward and gestures to L Xo in a way no one recognizes, but everyone knows is the perfect, exactly correct way to challenge. The challenge proceeds, with Xo does the normal sort of blast with power kind of thing, while Deirdre responds by drawing a wand and somehow deflecting all of Xo's attacks in a way everyone knows to be exactly perfect. She never attacks, and eventually Xo overpowers her.

To me at least, there's a whole ton of things here worth speculating about.
Firstly, what the hell was the Matilda/Wink interaction about? My thoughts:
Wink was made a Mission Lord by the Queen in 109. As of 112, he was still a mission lord, I believe, until the black shroud attacked. He asked for aid from Matilda, who apparently had no sympathy for his predicament. After it was gone, he was called as HL. So I assume his mission lord mission was complete(or abandoned?) at this point. My guess here is that whatever it was, it was rather directly related to his mission, and now that it's gone he can go back to being HL. But, why didn't Matilda help? One possibility was that she was upset with him for taking too long or being generally lazy. On the other hand, what do we know Wink spent his time doing? The Witsie War. Wink was made mission lord right after the first attacks and Ahab's defeat, and then he spent a lot of time off slaughtering and doing scary things in the Witsie mainland. I don't know what he did in 110, but it's possible that his mission was related to all that. If that's the case, Matilda might be angry at him for the methods he used, or because he didn't do quite the actual job he was supposed to there. But, Franklin and many other of the higher ups also participated, but didn't become 'mission lords' and still had to deal with the rest of their house matters as well. Alternatively, but connected to the 'wrong job' idea, the mission he was supposed to be on could be unrelated or significantly different, and he instead spent his time scaring the hell out of the Witsies, which Matilda frowned upon when he had other things he was supposed to be doing.

Another thing worth mentioning was the 'lock burst' that killed Alexander and the others, which Illusion failed to deal with (though, admittedly, Wink wasn't there, and it was primarily Olinky's job). Though Wink wasn't there, we don't know what caused the lock burst, so it could be related.

So the next question is, then, what was the dark shroudy thing? I can think of a few possibilities
- Some remnant of the old black avatar of Illusion: Kind of random, but that was the first thing I thought of. No real basis for the guess other than the blackness and remembering that those lock making whatever that the lock burst came from were tools of the old black avatars. It would also be a reasonable sort of thing for Wink to become a mission lord for, and possibly explain why the house members were attacked
- Something to do with the Dark Heart, but I think that's not too likely, only mentioning it cause it was, ya know, dark, and did generally mean things to the city.
- Something from the Witsies or whatever. I don't think this is all that likely either, really
Or it could be something more mysterious and unknown than that, which kind of brings us to the last major question: What does all this have to do with Teradeel, and is it our fault? I have theories on that, but I want to leave now, and also want to get this up, so does anyone else have any thoughts?

well… there also seems to be an unusually high amount of Speakers/Illusion crossover (Willow's parents are another example that pops immediately to my mind). Does anybody remember the more in-depth history of who's in charge of which parts of the Tweaklands? Ok, so after some thought, I think Marissa's tack would be to talk up how she wants to learn more about various places in the World (which she certainly does) and especially how much she likes to learn different languages and dialects. (which anyone who's hung with her for very long would notice anyway) So she'll probably be badgering her friends to introduce her to anyone they know from far off, and she will then be doing her best to make friends with them and convince them to keep in touch with her when they're off traveling. In all reality, from Marissa's point of view she really is just trying to develop a massive social circle, because she really does just like people and she isn't really subtle enough to be intentionally politically maneuvering a spy network. Now if Huck gets involved that's an entirely different matter…

Okay, so a few other minor details (most of which are already up on the site elsewhere or will get there soon…):

  • The Armed Bracers competition was a bit of a different crowd this year, with the three popularly regarded as the best fighters in the world sitting in the stands to watch the whole thing (with Collin and Lavinia and Tomas sitting with them, along with - once introductions to the Imp were made - a strange appearing-out-of-the-air character introduced as "Fatass" whose principal distinguishing characteristic was an unusually large, brown nose… at which the three oblivious-to-Old-World-symbology New World kids pretty much glance at their respective mentors, shrug, and go back to watching the fighting… ;)) Ended up with Fiona taking the bracers again, from Cesar Krugar this time (put Pauline in a bit of a spot wondering who to root for ;))
  • And as for the Calling itself, let's see…
    • Kurtus was once again uncalled, although it was a near thing (he got a "divine hint" that if he'd stepped forward and not been planning to give up his Green Mind as he did it something terrible and very, very warm would have happened to him…)
    • Tomas is now second plain Called in Seas; Igil is 9th. Not bad at all for such a huge house!
    • When Flight's turn came, Collin was Called as Traveler for the first time and decided to challenge Second Traveler Drune for place - the fight was the longest of the day (I believe it still held that distinction by the end?), but not a particularly nasty one, ending with both parties pretty much too wiped to stand up and Drune maintaining his place.
    • Tomas is 5th plain Called in Toath, and Mark is the same in Artifice.
    • Another long duel for the Companions in Speakers, though Marissa won hers - means that she's House Second now, pretty fancy stuff :) And with her as First Traveler and George Johnson as Third, seems like the young people are making some real headway in taking charge of things. (Oh, and Spisposs was also called, hurray :)
    • Boltan got promoted to Lord! Yay! :)
    • The big news of the day, though, was probably Illusion… first notable event was the calling of the Companions' creepy new friend Terradil as Third Lady, but the big news came a few moments later, when all of a sudden, out of nowhere, a strange black cloud came up to enshroud the Imp; the assembled City heard him yell "Matilda, kill it!" … and the Queen sat motionless, although the Blood Royal did come down to see what they could do about the matter - there was a blast of King's Power, and then the whole of the assembled House of Illusion was suddenly enshrouded in the black stuff - it didn't last very long, but before it dissipated and went away there were several injuries and one notable casualty (Princess Norma Stone of Wei, wife to Jim Bond). When the smoke cleared, the Imp looked different - no longer a lean old man, he'd regressed to looking closer to about 60, age just starting to show on him. (those wondering about Wink's past, present and future long-term status, begin speculation… now. ;)) Before taking his former place as Head of House, he stepped up to Terradil and made her un-ugly ;) And then the Gathering went on…
    • And Sskie, too, is now House Second in his own right.

And that's about it for events, except that we've been inexplicably introduced to this odd, unfriendly guy named Orop who seems to have been told he wants to come along with us…

Raine: Hey, this sounds like a great idea! I don't know if I'd be much help, but I do know a few people from the Flame Coast and places, and maybe Jeromy and I can scrape something together if you want. So what would your communication people have to do, anyway? Actually find ways to get messages out, or just let you have their names and gather information when they can and know you'll be in touch?

Oren: Hmmm… If you …
Well, no, that'd be telling. Maybe you'll find out about it for yourself. (Hey, this is in the Speculation category, right?)
